First Steps

Begin your conquest of the universe in 5Dim

5Dim is a free, massively multiplayer space strategy game (MMO) that you can play directly from the browser, with no downloads or installations. This first steps guide explains step by step everything you need to know to start on the right foot during your first day of play: how to manage resources, what to build first, which technologies to research, how to build your first ships and send your first fleet into space. If you follow the recommended order, you will end the day with a solid base, a running economy and clear ideas for conquering the galaxy.

Know your planet's resources

The foundation of your entire space economy

When you first log in you will find your starting planet. All game activity — building structures, researching technologies, manufacturing ships — consumes resources. In 5Dim there are ten main resources, each produced by its own mine or facility:

Mineral Basic resource for building all other structures; don't neglect it but don't go overboard raising levels either.

Crystal Also basic for all buildings but required in much smaller amounts; its main use at the start is for researching space mining and getting more asteroid collections.

Gas Third basic resource; buildings demand the least of it but you will find it very necessary in several basic technologies.

Plastic Although at the start you have plenty of robots, as you level up you will need more and the assembler produces them in exchange for plastic; you need continuous production.

Ceramic The most used resource in ship manufacturing; at the start you will also need it to colonize more planets.

Liquid Basic resource for building other industries; a priority in the first levels.

Micros Used in the manufacture of advanced components and high-end technologies.

Fuel Needed to move ships; initially its greatest expense comes from research.

M-A One of the most valuable resources: enables advanced research essential for your empire to grow.

Robots The workforce for building and researching everything. They are not consumed but you will always need more; the more you assign to a task the faster it will finish.

Resources accumulate while you are not playing. Remember that low levels yield much more than high levels, so it is better to have two buildings at level 10 than one at level 20.

First constructions: order matters

Optimize your planet from the first minute

The Construction panel is where you manage all your planet's buildings. You can distribute your robots across several constructions so they run simultaneously, and chain several levels of the same building to optimize time.

Recommended order for the first day:

1st — Mineral mine to level 20, crystal to 15, remaining mines and industries to 10

2nd — Complete the basic tutorial (it won't take more than 20 min) to obtain a good base of resources and buildings

3rd — Level 1 research is free; upgrade them all. Prioritize those that give resources: space mining and mine improvement

Prioritize having more planets. After finishing the tutorial you can have a second planet; the third costs a bit more but is achievable the next day if you plan ahead.

Collection — Go collect at an asteroid in your system or a more distant one if you need a specific resource like mineral or crystal

Ruin — Periodically attack the pirate ruin in your system; at the start it gives you a good extra resource bonus.

The Shelter is especially useful at the start: it stores an amount of each resource that attackers cannot loot. Level 5 is more than enough to begin.

Research: technology that defines your style

Upgrade the technologies that suit your playstyle

Research unlocks permanent advantages for your ships and economy. Each researched level accumulates benefits. Decide what to prioritize based on your playstyle, but remember that all research is necessary in one way or another, so don't completely abandon any.

Priority research for the first day:

Assembly and Hyper Engine
Will allow you to have better and faster ships; you complete more trips in less time.

Empire Administration
Gives Empire Points (EP) to have more planets or improve existing ones. Raise it to 11 as soon as you can to unlock the third planet.

Mine improvement
Increases production of all your mines. Level 3 on the first day is very good.

Space mining
Raising it gives access to mining more asteroids, a very important resource source throughout the entire game.

Weapons and Armor
At the start they don't help much, so it's not worth spending resources on them; prioritize economic growth.

Industry improvement
More production in all industries; more useful from the second day when you already have several at level 10.

Alliances: belonging to an alliance gives multiple advantages such as shared vision and joint attacks. Talk to your neighbors and join one or create your own. Remember that if you haven't yet colonized or started collecting you can move your starting planet.

Build your first ships

Multi-purpose corvettes to start; fighters for defense

Once you have the Shipyard built and basic research completed, you can manufacture ships. At first you will mainly use corvettes: they are versatile, suitable for collecting, transporting, attacking and exploring. Fighters are cheap and fast, useful for defending the planet or as cargo inside corvettes with hangars.

A unique feature of 5Dim is its ship design system: each type has multiple visual skins and you can customize the appearance and components so that each ship fulfills the function you need.

Corvette — your main ship for at least the first week; multi-purpose and very versatile.

Choose the skin you like most for your ships; it has no impact on performance.

You can support the 5Dim project by acquiring Novas and buying exclusive skins.

During the first days the shelter is more than enough to protect you. If you receive threats, build a few fighters: they are cheap, quick to manufacture and deter opportunistic attacks.

Send your first fleet into space

5Dim's fleet system is the most advanced in the genre

The Fleet Dispatch panel lets you send ships anywhere in the universe. What makes 5Dim unique is that a single fleet can chain multiple destinations with different missions in a single trip, something that does not exist in other games of the genre.

Transport Move resources between your own planets or collect what you have accumulated in collections.

Collection Send ships to asteroids to passively extract resources; very profitable at the start.

Attack ruin The pirate ruin in your system regenerates daily; attacking it gives a free resource bonus.

Explore relics Visit nearby relics to obtain random prizes such as resources or temporary improvements.

Expedition Up to 4 pending expeditions can accumulate; you can wait a couple of days until you have more strength before launching them.

Transfer (return) For a fleet to return with resources, use the Transfer mission at the return destination.

When you go to collect resources you can specify an exact amount or a priority per resource type. This prevents ships from returning empty if the asteroid has little stock of a specific resource.

Join an alliance as soon as possible

Alliances have great advantages that change the game

In 5Dim alliances offer passive advantages — seeing what your allies see, joint attacks — and active advantages through alliance research. To research, the alliance needs to build a Bank in space where all members' resources are pooled.

Shared vision You see the map through the eyes of all your allies.

Joint attacks Coordinate combined attacks to overcome stronger targets.

Joint research The bank finances improvements that benefit all members.

Territory Colonizing near allies facilitates defense and resource trading.

If you are starting out, look for an alliance near your planet or found one with your friends and neighbors. Territory is important: colonizing in allied zones multiplies everyone's efficiency.

Plan your first colony

More planets = more production = exponential growth

With an active exploration fleet and initial resources stabilized, the next big step is to colonize a second planet. Each colony has its own independent production, which multiplies your economy. Aim to have a third planet in the second week; you can have as many planets as you want but each one costs more Empire Points, so it is more efficient to improve them with modules at a certain point.

1. Explore nearby systems and visit relics to accumulate resources and clues.

2. Colonize a nearby planet; they usually come with a module that improves production.

3. Develop the colony from the start: several small buildings yield more than one large one.

To colonize you need to send a fleet with the Colonize mission. Choose planets in systems close to yours and your allies, so you will have vision and defense over a wider area.

First Day Checklist

Have you completed all of this before logging out?

Mineral and crystal mines at least to level 15; the rest at least to 10.
Assembler and liquid industry at least to 10; the rest at least to 5.
Collecting at an asteroid, either in your system or a nearby one.
You have attacked your system's ruin until it has no resources left — tomorrow it will have more.
Construction queue active (never leave it empty).
First exploration fleet sent and some nearby relics explored.
Alliance join request sent.
Shelter built to protect basic resources.
Your second planet colonized and with robots upgrading mines and industries.

Constructions and research keep progressing while you are offline. The most important thing is to always leave something in queue before logging out so as not to lose production time.
