5Dim Why 5Dim Combat system

Combat system

In 5Dim, battles are not resolved with a simple sum of statistics. They are the result of your ship design, your mission choice and your ability to read the battlefield. Every combat is unique because every fleet is unique — and winning requires thinking before attacking.

Real tactical combat, not simplified automatic resolution

Most space MMOs resolve combat with a basic algorithm: the server adds up attack power, subtracts the enemy's armor and decides the winner in milliseconds. In 5Dim the depth is different:

Battles unfold in successive rounds. In each round all ships fire simultaneously, damage is applied and destroyed units are removed. The process repeats until one side is eliminated or decides to withdraw. The crucial part is that new fleets can arrive between rounds from both sides — both the defender and the attacker can reinforce their position with additional fleets arriving during combat. Furthermore, battles are not limited to two sides: if there are multiple allied fleets in the same system or planet under attack, they can fight simultaneously on the same battlefield. The key difference: your ship design directly affects the outcome. A well-designed, smaller fleet can defeat a larger fleet of mediocre, poorly equipped ships.

But design is only half of the equation. The other half are fleet behaviors: before each mission you decide the position of each group on the battlefield, its combat attitude round by round (hostile, flanking, anti-defense, flee...) and whether a group must escort and protect another. Two fleets with exactly the same ships can get completely different results depending on how they are configured. Design builds your fleet; behaviors decide how it fights.

The three combat missions

In 5Dim fleets can carry out missions of very different natures: transport, exploration, colonization, expeditions... but the missions with real combat are exactly three:

  • Attack: a direct offensive mission. Your fleet travels to the target and fights until it destroys or is destroyed. The resources available on the battlefield go to the victorious attacker.
  • Destroy: targets the enemy planet's structures instead of looting its resources. The goal is to inflict maximum damage on the rival's facilities.
  • Conquer: the most ambitious mission. It involves combat and, if you succeed, the planet becomes yours. It requires careful planning: the planet must remain under your control at the end of the confrontation.

The rest of the fleet missions — orbit, transport, transfer, explore, colonize, expeditions and others — do not involve direct combat between players.

Behaviors: the real tactical differentiator

While most MMOs resolve combat as a sum of statistics, in 5Dim you have direct control over how each group of ships behaves within the battlefield. This is done through the behaviors system, which you define before each mission.

Each group of ships in your fleet has three configurable parameters:

  • Position on the grid: the battlefield has a grid of positions from A to C (columns) and from 1 to 5 (rows). Where you place each group determines which enemies it reaches first, what receives the first shots and what can maneuver freely. The front line absorbs the damage; the flanks surprise; the rear protects the most valuable.
  • Combat attitude: defines how the group acts round by round. There are eight available attitudes:
    • Hostile: attacks the nearest enemy. The standard offensive attitude and the simplest to use.
    • Keep Distance: stays at the optimal distance according to your ships' weapon components. Ideal for battleships and cruisers with long-range weapons.
    • Minimize Damage: tries to attack from a position where it receives no fire. For fragile ships with good range that prioritize surviving over dealing damage.
    • Flanking: actively seeks to attack enemy groups that are fleeing — freighters, retreating ships. Perfect for fast fighters. If there are no fleeing targets, it applies the configured alternative attitude.
    • Maximum Damage: concentrates fire on the ship type (fighter, corvette, cruiser, battleship) against which your ships deal the most damage according to their components. For specialized fleets. If there is no such target type, it applies the alternative attitude.
    • Anti-defense: ignores enemy ships and directs all fire toward planetary defenses and titans. Indispensable in assaults on well-fortified planets. If there are no defenses or titans, it applies the alternative attitude.
    • Maximum Range: always stays at maximum firing range, never getting closer than necessary. For very long-range ships that need distance to perform.
    • Flee: the group flees from all enemies without fighting. Used to protect freighters loaded with resources or ships that must not be risked in combat.

The Flanking, Maximum Damage and Anti-defense attitudes allow you to configure an alternative attitude that activates automatically when there are no valid targets for the main attitude.

  • Escort relationship: a group can be linked to another to actively protect it:
    • Short / Long Escort: the group accompanies and defends another at short or long range, intercepting threats heading toward the escorted group.
    • Free Escort: protects the escorted group with greater freedom of movement to react to different threats.

This system turns every battle into a real tactical decision: having the most powerful ships is not enough, you have to know how to place and configure them. A smaller but well-organized fleet can overcome a larger one with careless behaviors.

Resources in battle: either you take them or they are lost

In many games of the genre, the resources of destroyed ships float in space as debris that any fleet can collect later with a separate mission. In 5Dim the system works differently: when ships are destroyed during combat, the resources they carried become available within the battlefield itself.

Those resources can only be collected while combat is ongoing. When the battle ends, whatever has not been collected is lost. There is no second chance with a later mission.

This radically changes the strategic logic: in 5Dim there is no "harvest" phase separate from combat. Winning the battle and seizing its resources are part of the same tactical moment.

Frequently asked questions about combat

Can I see the outcome of a battle before my fleet arrives?
You can use the espionage function to learn the enemy's forces and estimate your odds, but the real combat result is calculated when the fleets meet in space.
Does real money give advantages in combat?
No. In 5Dim there is no paid booster that improves a ship's attack, armor or speed in battle. The only advantages are design, strategy and coordination with your alliance.
What happens if I lose all my ships?
The planet's buildings and resources are still there, but without a fleet you cannot defend it or attack. Rebuilding in the shipyard is the priority — and coordinating with your alliance to cover you while you do.
Can I fight as a new player?
Yes. There is a protection period for new players. Also, basic fighters are cheap to build: you can learn the system without risking large fleets.
